Method: what is read, and what a count means
The documents are public solicitations, project manuals and addenda published by public agencies and procurement portals, fifty states, refreshed weekly. A position is a section of a specification that names a brand, classified as basis of design or approved equal. Counts describe the public bid documents SpecIndex has read. Privately bid work produces no public specification and is not represented. A zero means absent from these documents, not absent from the market.
The basis of design is written in a public document nobody on the sales team reads.
A listing is a price check. The basis of design is the job. If nobody reads the specification, the first sign of a lost one is an order that goes to somebody else.

Approved equal positions for every basis of design position: 4,216 against 622 in the sample. The design seat is the scarce one; most named positions are a place on a list around somebody else's design.

Method and sample for these three figures
Not a survey and not an estimate. Measured on 13 October 2026 from every citable position the index returned for a panel of 15 national brands across the ten states where it holds the most documents: 4,838 positions in all, 622 of them basis of design, on 1,421 projects. The panel is a stated population, not the whole index, and counts describe the public bid documents SpecIndex has read; privately bid work produces no public specification and is not represented. Two candidate statistics that failed row level checking were dropped rather than published.
